Press release
New resource to help parents understand learner journeys
The National Parent Forum of Scotland is pleased to announce the launch of Learning Pathways in the Senior Phase and Beyond, part of our ‘…in a Nutshell’ series to help parents understand changes within the Senior Phase of Curriculum for Excellence and beyond.
The nutshell explains how young people have greater choice over where and how they wish to learn, with the aim of creating a more balanced relationship between vocational and academic education. In practice this means that pupils in S4-S6 at school, or at age 16-18, can choose to learn at school, college (or a combination of school and college), or undertake an apprenticeship, training placement, or go on to university – or combine these options. The aim is to help parents understand the different routes and the wide range of possibilities that this new approach opens up to young people.
The development of this Nutshell follows on from NPFS’ involvement in the Wood Commission on Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce. NPFS’ role is to ensure that the Commission’s recommendations are understood and supported by parents. We hope that the Nutshell will help parents feel that they are better informed and more able to help their children make choices which best suit their needs and interests, while at the same time developing skills that will help them succeed in the workplace.
The Nutshell is being launched today (Friday 31st 2014) at a Conversation Day being hosted by Education Scotland at Dumfries House, Cumnock. The purpose of the day is to gather information about the many innovative ideas already happening across the country with a view to moving forward with the recommendations set out in the Wood Commission’s report.
Copies of Learning Pathways… are being distributed to schools across Scotland, with the intention that they will be shared with parents.
